The Gardenheads will release its new album Thursday, May 24 at Outland. This week they released the video for lead single “Highway 65 Blues”. The concept is simple: van + road trip + lawlessness + awesome cameos. Grand theft auto becomes drinking and driving which turns into driving while intoxicated (not actually … legally, though, it was all theatrics and the van wasn’t actually moving at all … that’s a damn good green screen). It should also be noted that for periods of the DWI, there isn’t anybody driving at all. There’s also an awesome sorcerer battle and cameos by Samuel Clemens, Batman on a skateboard, shotgun-toting and magic mushroom chomping Jesus, David the Gnome, and Ronald McDonald wasted mowing the lawn. So, yeah, it’s a fun video. Check it out. The Gardenheads will also be in studio for SGF Local Live Sunday, May 27.

American Legion Post 676 (5484 W Sunshine) has long been an SGF venue, but is heading a new direction (while physically staying put) and putting a bigger emphasis on local original music. The Post features two floors and outdoor concert space (read: festival). Post 676 is located just outside SGF city limits (read: no smoking ordinance, no noise ordinance). This weekend marks the first-ever Rock N Rubber two-day music/motorcycle festival with 18 acts scheduled. Check the lineup for the entire weekend. Bring your lawn chairs!

SPiNRaD transferred to SGF from Arkansas as a four-piece of precise (but loose) musicians: David Styer on keys/vocals, Austin Farnam on sax (sometimes two … at the same time), Jeff Repo on drums, and bassist Sean King. Shortly after the change of scenery came a change of lineup when it became a five-piece, adding of one of the area’s premier guitarists, Aaron Waggoner. The result is an unmistakable full sound, blending jazz and rock. “Lie Awake” is the first single off Chase The Sun, which will be released June 14 at the Outland Ballroom. It doesn’t necessarily show off the band’s full range, but it’s a single fit for pop sensibilities. “Lie Awake” debuted on Sunday’s episode of M.E.O. Radio.

Delta Sol Revival joined SGF Local Live on Mother’s Day, Sunday (May 13) for some absolutely electric live performances and conversation.

John Prine

Long considered a “songwriter’s songwriter,” John Prine is a rare talent who writes the songs other songwriters would sell their souls for. Evidence of this is the long list of songwriters who have recorded gems from his extensive catalog, including Johnny Cash, Bonnie Raitt, the Everly Brothers, John Denver, Kris Kristofferson, Carly Simon, Ben Harper, Joan Baez, and many others.

On October 25th, 2011, Oh Boy Records released The Singing Mailman Delivers. This two-disc archival release features the earliest studio and live recordings from Prine dating back to 1970, one year before that prolific debut album. And, it’s not like his work is irrelevant in 2012. On June 22, 2010 Oh Boy Records released a tribute album titled “Broken Hearts and Dirty Windows: The Songs of John Prine”. The album features members of the modern folk revival including My Morning Jacket, The Avett Brothers, Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band, Old Crow Medicine Show, Lambchop, Josh Ritter, Drive-By Truckers, Nickel Creek’s Sara Watkins, Deer Tick featuring Liz Isenberg, Justin Townes Earle, Those Darlins, and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon.

Missouri State University has announced that American country songstress Carrie Underwood will return to JQH Arena October 28. Ticket information and other details will be released next week. A show announcement in SGF probably isn’t the biggest news for her fans today as Underwood’s new album, Blown Away, is available today. She first played SGF June 15, 2010.

Adam Faucett will play The Outland in downtown SGF on Saturday (April 28). TAG caught up with the Arkansas song-writer the morning after a basement party in Omaha (while he was still in said basement). Learn of beard maintenance, constant song-writing, and tour vans (in one word).

SGF probably best remembers Les Izmore as the Real Rhymers Camp official Granny Smith apple advocate. He left for Kansas City five years ago where he emcees for the 15-piece rock/funk/tribal/hip hop band Hearts of Darkness. HOD is making waves across the midwest, with billing on some of the region’s biggest festivals and stages. It will play Kauffman Stadium at a Kansas City Royals game for the second year in-a-row in 2012. Hearts of Darkness will play in SGF this Friday (April 27) at Highlife Martini Lounge. There’s not a mathematician in the world who can get them all on that stage, do NOT miss this one.

Izmore also released a solo album near the end of last year, aptly titled Granny Smith Theorem. He plans to have another project out this year. TAG caught up with Izmore to talk about his band, Real Rhymers Camp and the green labeled apple.

Shinedown headlined The Avalanche Tour with two other bands at the Shrine Mosque on April 9. I was there. It rocked.

The show started with a relatively new band called New Medicine that was full of energy and even though they only played a set for about 30 minutes, ending with their current single, “Race You to the Bottom,” the audience had a huge response to them. They sold CDs throughout the rest of the show in the lobby.

Adelitas Way performed next and really got the crowd energized before Shinedown came out. Adelitas Way was promoting their current record, “Home School Valedictorian” featuring their current hit single, “Alive.” They gave away a signed guitar immediately after they played while they signed autographs at their merchandise booth.

Shinedown came on stage and played at two-hour set bursting with energy. They opened with the title track from their third record “The Sound of Madness,” immediately going into “Diamond Eyes” that was featured on the Expendables soundtrack in 2010.

Shinedown is currently traveling promoting their fourth album “Amaryllis” that debuted March 27. They played both current singles “Bully” and “Unity” along with several other tracks from the current album.

Though the concert had high-energy songs, they also played some of their ballads and, of course, their famous cover of “Simple Man” was featured in their encore and was a major crowd-pleaser.

“Put your hands in the air /If you hear me out there /I’ve been looking for you day and night,” it was hard to find a person in the crowd who didn’t have at least one hand in the air.

Though lead guitarist Zach Myers tweeted earlier in the afternoon he wasn’t feeling well, his playing didn’t show any weakness at all. Myers let out raging solos and amazing skill throughout the entire show.

As the band left the stage there was a roar of applause and in the streets lining the Shrine many people meandered around hoping to get a final glimpse of the band.

Josh Turner is coming to Drury on June 15.

Josh Turner, a multiplatinum country artist, is coming to play at Drury’s O’Reilly Family Event Center on Friday, June 15.

Tickets go on sale Friday, April 27 and will start at $25. The show will also feature congruent acts with local ties, with appearances by Matt Stell and the Crashers and The Mark Chapman Band. Stell is a Drury alum and a former DU basketball player. The Mark Chapman Band is one of the area’s premier acts which has made a habit of touring throughout the region.

But, back to Turner. The Hannah, S.C. native has sold more than 5 million albums and scored numerous multiweek number ones (“Your Man,” ”Would You Go With Me,” ”Why Don’t We Just Dance,” and “All Over Me”). Turner’s debut album, Long Black Train was certified platinum with more than 1 million copies sold, and his sophomore album, Your Man, was one of only 4 country albums to reach double-platinum status in 2006.

The debut single from his fourth album Haywire, “Why Don’t We Just Dance,” a 4-week number 1 hit was the most-played song on country radio in 2010, according to Mediabase. The song was number 3 on Billboard’s year-end Hot Country Songs list, followed immediately by “All Over Me” at number 4. ”Why Don’t We Just Dance,” took home an American Country Award for Single of the Year-Male in December of the same year.

Scoring back-to-back number ones with his second single release from Haywire, “All Over Me,” made Turner one of only 7 country artists to have 2 number one hits in2010.

Turner’s new single, “Time is Love” from his upcoming album Punching Bag was recently released to radio and is now available on iTunes.

“I don’t ever want to take anything for granted,” he says. “I’ve learned from certain people that it takes a lot of hard work, passion and love for what you do to have longevity in this career.”

SGF blues band Tripwire has split up. The group announced via Facebook that after 13 years (quite a run for any band, really) the trio (of Jody Cottengim, Nathan Melton, Stoney Cottengim) is throwing in the towel.

Tripwire has disbanded. That’s right.. After thirteen years we are calling it quits.. Stoney has decided to hang up his Tripwire hat with the support of his fellow band mates.. We would like to place a special thank you to our family, friends and fans for giving us the opportunity for this great ride.. Peace, Love & Blues…
