At TAGsgf.com, we believe that every child should be well costumed. But good, original costumes are difficult to find (remember when people made their own bitchin’ costumes?). You might go to plan B if you plan on sending your child out into your neighborhood representing your household with a sheet draped over his head, with “Boo” written in Sharpie. It’s runs in the same vein as handing out bookmarks. We didn’t tackle the morally bankrupt kids costumes because you should already know better.

NOOOOOOOOOO! Not Candy Corn. How could you do this to a child?

The cornerstone of Halloween is Trick or Treating. Notice, it’s not “Trick or Random Crap”, “Trick or 18th Century Hard Candy” or “Trick or Scripture”. It’s “Trick or Treat”. So give them something good to eat. Any effort is a good effort, because the only thing worst than the house with bad candy is the house with no candy. However, kids don’t believe in Trick or Treating moral victories – a good effort just isn’t good enough. This is the one night of the year when a kid’s recall is perfect. To this day I remember every one of my parent’s neighbors by their Halloween presentation. Do you want to be a bad memory?

To kick off our week of Halloween TAG 5s, TAGsgf.com looks at the “treats” you should keep to yourself. And don’t be the jerk who leaves the light off. If you’re going to be that reclusive, at least toss a bowl on the porch filled with Kit Kat and a “Please Take Only One” sign.

Which SGF weather anchor is your favorite?

It’s a go-to conversation starter. It can cancel an event … or work. It effects your attire. We are obsessed with the weather, so how that information is consumed is valuable. This week, TAGsgf.com determines our favorite SGF TV meteorologists. The results of their gauged predictions frequently end up as punchlines, so this isn’t necessarily a list of “most accurate.” This list tests delivery, entertainment and general comfort in the message. Every weather anchor is a little different, and there needs to be a balance of straight information and entertainment. A good mustache doesn’t hurt.

The best spot in the house, is at the bar, to belly up with the staff.

A good foodie experience is mostly defined by food and value, but a far under-appreciated aspect is service. You expect good service, and most times it’s best when you barely notice the person taking your order. Bad experiences should rarely ride on the shoulders of the server, even though your tip reflects the performance of the whole restaurant. This week TAGsgf.com examines which SGF restaurants have the best service most consistently. Grad School leads the way reaching three lists and receiving a first-place vote – quick and courteous. Ocean Zen landed in second with service so silent it’s surprising. Taylor’s has old fashioned service – “the way it should be” one voter quipped. Flame Steakhouse provides good service during moments of madness throughout happy hour and pulled into fourth. Avanzare, Haruno and the southside Houlihan’s all received lone first-place votes to tie for the final spot.

People with degrees more advanced than mine will tell you that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. And while Taco Bell‘s 4th Meal campaign is nauseating at best, it does support the argument for the less stressed meal that takes place between dinner and breakfast.

Interestingly our list landed with a 24-hour breakfast diner at the top – and it’s not Glenstone’s home of greenish gravy. Ziggie’s has had several locations, including some fails, but continues to bring a consistent middle of the night breakfast. It wasn’t any of the voters favorite spot, but it landed on every list. Waffle House was second, receiving a first-place vote, just a single point ahead of City Dogs, downtown’s favorite hot dog cart.

In a three-way tie to round out the list were Taco Bell, Price Cutter Bistro, and Chicago Cheesesteak – all garnered a first-place tally.

With arms the size of your waist and catch phrases that create tears, our movie action heroes have become a part of our homes. Sure, they may use a ton of roids lift weights at an unhealthy pace, but Americans have found safety in our mostly foreign-born American heroes. The list starts with a logjam at the top in a tie for votes, and first-place votes, but Bruce Willis takes the nod over JCVD by reaching every voter’s list. Willis doesn’t portray the typical mega star action figure. He’s built, but not unrelatable. He speaks English, and for the most part, he’s a generally good actor. But, Bruce is a bad ass. The Die Hard series speaks for itself, in an action-movie class of its own. Jean-Claude Van Damme got 11 points as well, but made just three tallies. Of course, JCVD is the perfect example of roiding megastar who can’t act a lick, but we love him for two reasons. Best unrealistic fight scenes and unintentional comedy. How come Lionheart is never in any greatest movie ever talk? Yes, that’s a serious question.

Rambo obviously cannot be denied in this argument,  Sylvester Stallone landed third on all four lists ahead of the Governator, Arnold Schwarzenegger at No. 4. Chuck Norris took home a first-place vote, as the voter feared a vengeance seeking Norris if he wasn’t on the top of our list. My fingers are crossed that Norris doesn’t see this, but I have heard that he sees all (insert Chuck Norris joke).

In creating this list we had to toe the line of actor and action hero. For example, Matt Damon is great in the Bourne series, but is Damon an action hero? No. Is he a hell of an actor? Yes. In the contrary, JCVD is a hell of an action hero, but is he an actor? It’s hard to say no. Judge for yourself – click this link, it will be the best four minutes of your week.

Let’s face it. Now that schools are back in session (god bless ‘em), driving in SGF took an exponential leap in levels of frustration. Traffic is much worse than it was not too long ago, so red lights (especially when turning left) naturally become harder to miss. This week, we look at the intersections that tend to irritate us the most. We start downtown with a miserable spot, most notably after 8 p.m. or just about any time on the weekend and it doesn’t even have traffic lights. Walnut and South received two first-place votes and was the only spot to reach double digits. The foot traffic is a bear to get through – so park far, and walk yourself. Comically, every intersection on Glenstone took second.

The stoplights on Glenstone are timed so that they stagger when going green, with the idea being that if you drive the speed limit and reach the light sequence the right way you’ll have a green light all the way down the street. Hit the sequence wrong, though, and you will stop. At every. Single. Light. – Anonymous TAGsgf.com voter

The train bridge makes Grant and Commercial a beast to get through and made the list with 7 points.

TAGsgf.com's favorite Mexican-style restaurant.

While it’s true that Chinese-style restaurants are king in the Ozarks, there’s plenty of gravitational Mexican food in SGF as well. Most SGFers claim their Mexican food territory, so this week’s top five is to settle the score once and for all. While our winner didn’t receive any top votes, Maria’s is the only restaurant to etch a space on all four ballots. The always buzzing, always busy home of the massive tequila list dominates its spot downtown on South Avenue with house twists on the standard Mexican fare. Mexican Villa grabbed 12 points, including a pair of first-place mentions – it’s the home cooking of local Mexican food, led by the Sancho. Cielito Lindo, La Hacienda, and El Sombrero round out our top five. What’s your favorite place for an enchilada (and perhaps some tequila)?

There are a lot of factors when deciding on which movie theater you head to for a night out. Frequently it’s convenient time of the choice film, but comfort, concessions, price, and sound/screen/projection quality all play a factor, too. TAGsgf.com’s favorite theater won primarily on selection of movies. There are plenty of places to go when you want to see the next blockbuster, but only one if you want an a that small budget award winner, or art film, The Moxie. Downtown’s home of independent movies was recently purchased by a new non-profit, but nothing has changed about the venue. It received a pair of first-place votes. Hollywood Theater edged Campbell 16 for second. Though pricey, Hollywood features the best sound and projection experience, while sheer number of screens at Campbell keeps a large selection around. The Palace and Springfield 8 rounded out the list in a tie.

Houlihan's tied for our favorite place to eat outside - it also hosts the best patio party in the city (but we may be biased).

There’s nothing better than patio dining on a warm night highlighted by cold pitchers of beer (or long islands), great food and live entertainment – at least a game on a tv. SGF is home to several spots to eat outside, so this week we tallied our favorites. In a deadlock for the top spot, Houlihan’s and Springfield Brewing Company tied with nine points, just a notch ahead of Ebbets Field. The Houlihan’s patio has become a popular spot, thanks to some tasty fish tacos and an unbelievable special on long island teas. Friday nights at Houlihan’s you’ll catch some of SGF’s best musicians during the (*cough* – inexcusable self promotion) TAGsgf.com Patio Party. Brew Co. doesn’t have entertainment on their upstairs patio, but with the door open, the volume is just about right as a conversational backdrop. Brew Co.’s real advantage? Fresh, delicious beer. Ebbets has a glorious outdoor eating section in the back. It fills up during happy hour with Cardinals fans eager to guzzle domestic drafts and watch the St. Louis game or head over to Hammons Field for the Springbirds. Big Whiskey’s shares similar baseball viewing qualities in fourth, tied with Galloway Station.

To be clear, we didn’t make this list to be mean. But every once in a while you find yourself in the uncomfortable circumstance when you need to use the restroom but don’t know if the accommodations are worth it. We also recognize that our list is compiled completely by males, but I can’t imagine establishments putting much more care into one than the other. So, ladies, make sure to leave comments on where you loathe using the restroom. The reasons one might not like a lavatory are many: long lines, too many people have missed, never soap, no door (or stall at all), there’s actually vomit on the floor or the carpet makes you dizzy – a reason one voter actually used for Houlihan’s after a couple Long Islands. Hammons Student Center got a vote because it can be difficult to not make eye contact (just look up, right?). The top two vote getting bad bathrooms made all four lists which means trouble. Ray’s Lounge edged the Outland/High Life complex. With all due respect to Ray, the men’s restroom appears to have not been cleaned since it was Good Time Charlie’s. On busy nights, most patrons actually use the fence in the back of the property. It’s been the subject of some comedy for quite some time. Luke warm beer and a ready conversation with Ray make the trip worth standing on your tip toes to keep from sticking to the tile. We’re big fans of the Outland/High Life complex, I’d even venture to say we frequent the area. And while it has improved significantly, it’s still set up a three man with a stall door that doesn’t close. The later in the night you enter, the line gets hard to handle and people start to miss. Finishing out the list are Ernie Biggs – it received a first-place vote because one TAGsgfer said he’s never not seen “vomit on something”, Summers at the Rivers – one word, “trough”, and Remmington’s Downtown.

As you can tell from the voting, the debate of sports movie is hard to contain to a top five list. You can see how spread out our votes are, with just two films appearing on three lists. Hoosiers, grabbed two first-place votes taking the top spot, with the grown man tearjerked, Rudy placing second. Sandlot received the other first-place vote. Rounding out the list is a threeway tie between The Hustler, Bull Durham, and Seabiscuit. Yes, that Seabiscuit. It is that shocking.

This week we explore SGF celebrities. Something about that statement doesn’t sound right. Let’s start over.

However rare, SGF has played the role of home (or at least host) to handfuls of celebrities. We didn’t have many boundaries for this week’s discussion, only that the celebs are still living (keeping the likes of Mickey Mantle, Jesse James, Payne Stewart and Robert E Smith from receiving votes). Even the amount of time spent in SGF was made grey, so college stops were counted, though it nudged Angelina Jolie from the top five. TAGsgf.com’s biggest SGF celebrity is Brad Pitt taking down three first-place votes. Pitt is in a different stratosphere of movie stardom and baby purchasing – not sure which he‘s more famous for these days. Bob Barker, of The Price is Right fame, has his own street in SGF so he’s an obvious selection at No. 2. Barker received an honorary degree from Drury a couple of years ago. There’s a couple rumors about Barker as an ungergrad at DU, but that’s for another day. In third are  Philadelphia Phillies slugger, and former MVP, Ryan Howard and the chubby laugh maker John Goodman – each went to Missouri State. Actually I think we should have a sub category of this top five with Goodman movies – post answers in comments (King Ralph, anyone?). Kathleen Turner and Angelina Jolie each received four votes, but Turner is SGF born and bred, so she makes the cut.

Everybody dances in the car. At least when nobody’s looking. Sometimes it’s to otherwise embarrassing music – songs you don’t want others to know you enjoy. This week we pulled back the curtain a little bit with our top five guilty pleasure songs. Granted, just one song made multiple lists, but it was still a great exercise in revealing the TAGsgfers. Ke$ha’s Tik Tok is the top song we’ll crank when you’re not looking.

Nobody feels proud pulling up to the talking box, but most everybody finds themselves following the yellow arrows to dollar menus on occasion. The experience is hardly good, but when hurried you seek only fast and cheap. The TAGsgf.com five fast food faves are led by the Border. Taco Bell is cheap, consistent and offers ways to avoid an immediate coronary. White Castle took second and is regional enough to be considered – everybody knows somebody who made the drive to St. Louis for nothing but a Crave Case. Chik Fil A and McDonald’s tied for third, with a cluster in the fifth spot, including three restaurants which received only first-place votes and made no other lists.

Eat at these places only in case of emergency! Eat local!

TAGsgf.com‘s favorite SGF landmarks start with a pair of buildings which reflect different images on our city. Darth Vader, err … Hammons Tower, looks down on the city hosting as SGF’s tallest building. Supposedly there’s a code which will keep it as such, limiting other potential developments, but it’s hard to see this as a skyscraper hot bed. The Tower is ultra-contemporary with a ritzy restaurant on top. From any view, the Hammons trumps the skyline. Tied on our list is the historic Heers Building on the square. Once the proud centerpiece of a booming retail district, Heers has been tossed amongst developers who cannot get a proper plan/funding in place. It remains an integral piece of our history. JQH shows up again on the list with Hammons Field in third. The square and the touristy Bass Pro Shops round out our top five.

When it‘s songs you know that you want to hear, SGF has a plethora of options. Cover bands have a heavy influence on each day’s Show Report, leading to the discussion of which band is best. With three votes reported, TAGsgf.com’s tallied a tie for the top spot with oldies dance (50s and 60s rock and soul) group The Detectives and the relaxed vibe of Eckels and Friends. Each holds down weekly gigs where you can find them. The Detectives at the Outland on Thursdays with Eckels and Friends at Ebbets Field each Sunday. The Dropouts (punk) and Sequel Dose (classic rock) tied for fourth on our list. Machine Gun Symphony rounds out our five.

What if Borat's hotel fight ran uncensored on NBC?

For those of us who are easy to please, rainy weekend afternoons can create TV excitement. You flip on the tube and an old favorite movie is just starting to play. The game’s rain delay is quickly cured. Then it happens. Your favorite villain starts to speak in Japanimation, and names of baked goods begin to fill the role of the best four-letter words. Day ruined. The nonsensical cuts and censored speech/violence/nudity strip the realness/comedy from your cheap entertainment, leaving you to choose between infomercials and cooking shows. The TAGsgf.com list of worst movies cut for TV revolves around comedies and mafia classics. Borat tops our list, followed by Half Baked and The Big Lebowski tied for second. SGF is surrounded by great scenery, especially on the seemingly endless rivers and streams which provide wonderful floating. TAGsgf.com‘s vote for best river to float is hard because there are so many options and none are bad. Of course the river depends on the type of float you’re seeking and where you put in. At the top of our list, the Buffalo River offers a lot of natural beauty – breathtaking bluffs are everywhere – with some nice and easy rapids. Each followed by the social hour gravel bar. In second place on our list, the Niangua River serves as the unofficial drunken float (college students are the mainstays), though it creates an aluminum mess downstream. Rounding out our top five are smaller streams with plenty of nature to enjoy – the Current, Meramec, and Finley.

The skill of engineering a delectable sandwich is a true art form. It’s not the simple ability of meat and cheese stacking. Is the bread consistency matched with an appropriate level of sauce or spread? Lettuce and sprouts are great for depth, but too much is, well too much. Of course, meat and cheese quality, veggie freshness, price and staff play into the total sandwich experience as well. It was a tight race for the No. 1 spot on the TAGsgf.com Top 5 sandwiches, but SGF’s cheesesteak haven was the winner. Chicago Cheesesteak Company on Walnut got the nod for deliciously low-cost grilled specialty sandwiches. They obviously aren’t the traditional submarine-style sandwiches which fill most of the other slots. It narrowly edged Sub Shop, home of inexpensive footlongs with fresh ingredients and a large menu of classic subs. Mr. Goodcents, Dagwoods, and Bambinos round out the top five. Bamino’s, the surprise of the top five, has a very solid toasted sub selection.

What are the best WIFI spots in SGF?

Today’s top five hits the TAGsgfers pretty heavily. Our work revolves around always being Internet ready and trying to meet and network with as many other SGFers as possible. That being said, we’re pretty experienced in finding spots to work (and, in at least one case, relax). What are the best spots for WiFi Internet (outside of home)? Keep in mind that we compile lists separately of each other, so it might be obvious where we frequently meet. The Coffee Ethic on the square shares a wall with the downtown library, and together they provide a great wireless signal with plenty of treats, resources and coffee to get by. MudHouse landed in second with board games for your breaks. Buffalo Wild Wings makes the list big on nights when the game is on. If you need to work, but want to watch (and drink a beer), it’s the ideal location. The Library Center on the Southside and Barnes & Noble – finally free! – round out our top five. And remember, WiFi users, the providers not named “library” are a business. Give them a little support and buy some grub – at least a cup o’ Joe – for providing your connection.

There are two bar crowds – after work and after hours. This week we voted on which pubs/restaurants had the best happy hours. Of course, this mostly comes down to food and drink specials. The delicious (and cheap) burgers blended from cuts of steak at Flame’s Red Room took the TAGsgf.com vote. The 2-for-1 drinks are a nice supplement, as well. Schultz & Dooley’s has locations in Chesterfield Village and on South National – each has a busy happy hour clientele. The karaoke haven hauled in a couple of first-place votes. In third is Adobe with cheap draft beer (Miller Lite’s the special) and a free appetizer buffet. Following our top three is a bit of a snag. Five restaurants tied for fourth (and fifth).

In honor of the beginning of the Major League Baseball season, and as a special welcome to warmer spring weather, there are few more exciting times than the beginning of professional baseball. So, it got us to thinking, “What are our favorite places to watch baseball?”

Providing something many Ozarkers had never experienced before, Hammons Field has won over the hearts of the TAGsgf.com crew, as well as many locals. Built in 2004, not only can you catch future St. Louis Cardinals (Colby Rasmus, Joe Mather, Kyle McClellan), you can see top prospects from other teams (Colorado’s Troy Tulowitzki, Kansas City’s Luke Hochevar, Texas’ Elvis Andrus), Missouri State and local high school regular season baseball games and, one of the top perks for one of our staffers — “STL Cards game on TVs while at SGF Cards game at Hammons Field – BLAM-O!”

Either way, Hammons Field has not just become something we do, but it’s something we share as a community. Coming in second was Kauffman Stadium, the home of the Kansas City Royals and its wonderful aura. Ebbets Field — the restaurant on 1027 E. Walnut, not the original home of the Brooklyn Dodgers — was third, flexing it’s intimate, yet walking distance to Hammons Field. It’s a can’t-miss pre- and post-game hang-out spot. Old Busch Stadium, which is now a parking lot, came in fourth and one TAGsgf.com staffer made, “At home while grilling,” his top selection, sliding in at No. 5. Nice weather, baseball and grilling? It’s tough to beat that.

SGFers are the lucky recipients of great parks. A statement which has been subject to some dispute. One voter filed just three votes, citing “crappy parks” in town. Personally, this was one of the most difficult top fives we‘ve done. The good parks in SGF are incredible, but the fields with jungle gyms (though filling a neighborhood need) could be noted as “crappy”. What do you think? With brilliant natural scenery, Sequiota Park won our vote, topping a pair of lists. Sequiota is home to a cave, lake and jogging trail which stretches into the tree line (it also nudges up against Galloway Station for that mid-run beer). The Nature Center is another Southside favorite with miles of hiking trails surrounded in the natural beauty of the Ozarks. Nathanael Greene is extremely spacious with several gardens boasting regional plants and flowers. Among the highlights are the Mizumoto Japanese Stroll Garden, Hosta Garden and a Butterfly garden. A large pond hosts ducks and geese during the warm months. The front end of Oak Grove isn’t much to look at, but the disc golf course is a popular attraction. Silver Springs is basically the field with a jungle gym. BUT it has one of the most active outdoor basketball courts in town (outside of Missouri State campus).

Saturday's Mini Hoop Shootout Winner Jacob Govero took down two dozen rowdy opponents to capture the crown.

The games were crazy, and I’m not just talking about the upsets and insane finishes. Jim Rome said it was the best opening round he’s ever seen. That’s a bold statement, but there were a number of great moments during the opening weekend of the TAGSGF.com and Power 96.5 FM 2010 Tourney Throwdown at Boomers. We took a “One Shining Moments” early glance back. The runaway favorite moment was Northern Iowa shocking Kansas on Saturday night. The room was packed with KU fans scattered amongst the pro-MVC crowd which was thrilled by the outcome (mostly Ali Farokhmanesh’s “lengthy” 3-pointer). Still riled up, the crowd gathered for our second-favorite moment of the weekend — our Mini Hoop Shootout which followed. SGFer Jacob Govero took the crown, silencing a couple dozen taunting competitors. The incredible finish between Michigan State and Maryland tied with our Mike Anderson Staring Contest (Mizzou’s coach has the most stoic face in college basketball) for third. SGFer Ryan Miller won the staring competition with an extreme amount of focus. One contest pitted against Kaitlyn Vaughan seemed to last 5+ minutes. One taunter before a Paper-Rock-Scissors competition is fourth on our list with a quote (she didn’t win).
