Will Ferrell's back, and I don't care if he's played the role before, The Other Guys looks incredible.

We talked a bit last week about the possible oversaturaion of Steve Carell, something that happened a bit to Will Ferrell a couple years ago (even though in your heart you know Step Brothers is incredible – it just took a second watch). Now, Ferrell is back with Mark Wahlberg in a role that seems like Ron Burgundy as a detective. The Other Guys has a formula I think will soar despite following the recent trend of busted cop/mall security comedies. This one has legs. Besides, Ferrell fans were really just disappointed in Kicking & Screaming, right? Maybe Semi Pro.

Steve Carell in Dinner for Schmucks

I heard a few times recently that we’re getting too much Steve Carell. Sure we’re seeing an awful lot of him these days, but until something he puts out is “bad” I don’t think we will be oversaturated. Also, Despicable Me shouldn’t count because it’s animated. Yes, the producers of Dinner for Schmucks could have packed the movie’s best punchlines into the trailers – thus ruining my until something’s bad argument. But, with the cast (including Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis, and Jemaine Clement), it feels more like there’s probably jokes to spare.

This week’s other openers don’t get a mention. But you still must see Inception , which continues to dominate the box office leaderboard week after week.

Steve Carrell’s Despicable Me joins a strong group of animated movies at the box office. Predator is back with new effects, but can’t touch the original. Right? Not a chance. Grown Ups didn’t open to its hype, drawing less than $20-mil, but I’d make the same case for Twilight. Yes, $69M is a lot of change, but wouldn’t you expect that hype to at least touch a bill?

Jonah Hill’s under-confident, over-rotund line of comedy is easily relateable for everybody who was friends with the class smart ass. It works again in this week’s release of Get Him to the Greek, but is the role timeless? Time will tell.
