Tonight brings you the fifth and final installment of the monthly Queen City Cinema series at Moxie Cinema, a five-month chance to see local filmmakers’ work on the big screen at the Moxie at no cost to you courtesy of the Missouri Film Alliance of Springfield. This time around, it’s time to scare your pants off.* Horror cinema is the theme for May, beginning with two local short films starting at 9 p.m., namely Brook Linder Finds a Monster In His Backyard, directed by–you guessed it–Brook Linder (whom you might also know from this), and Jason Gets Fired, directed by Johnno Zee:

After that, it’s time for a screening of American Scary, a documentary written and produced by SGFer Sandy Clark (who will host a Q&A session before the documentary starts) looking at the rise, fall and sort-of return of the localized horror-movie program host. (Think Joe Bob Briggs from TNT’s MonsterVision, except usually horror characters themselves and based in your town.) Here’s the trailer:

If you weren’t able to get to Moxie Cinema this past weekend for the sixth annual Springfield and the Ozarks 48-hour Film Festival, aka SATO48, well, it’s over. The seven groups of short films, all filmed the weekend of April 15-17, finished screening yesterday, so your next chance to participate won’t come until the awards are handed out on May 5 at Gillioz Theatre. However, that does not mean you can’t see the movies. Many SGF filmmakers have already uploaded their finished work to the Internet, with more sure to come. So if you Easter plans, a weekend-long date with your couch or other reasons you couldn’t attend, it’s time to raise the volume and recline in your favorite theater-substitute chair. Benjamain "Coach" Wade

A black-tie event will serve as the world premiere of 180, shot last year in SGF. Starring Bolivar’s Benjamin “Coach” Wade in his screen debut as Gavin Larson, 180 is the story a Rock-god who was the only survivor of a plane crash that killed the rest of his band. You might also remember Wade as “Dragon Slayer” from a couple different seasons of Survivor, which cost his job as Southwest Baptist University’s head women’s soccer coach.

The viewing is at the Gillioz Theatre Friday, June 17 with live acoustic performances by Steve Ewing, formerly of The Urge, and Randy Evans, whose band (The Indifference) is responsible for 180′s original music score. Ewing and Evans also have roles in the film.

180 was co-produced by Lunch Truck Productions out of Los Angeles and Springfield’s Easy Water Films.

Variety is the name of the game for the March edition of the Missouri Film Alliance of Springfield‘s Queen City Cinema tonight at Moxie Cinema, with two very different and somewhat quirky films showing the more farcical and darkly amusing sides of SGF-area filmmaking. There’s also a late addition providing a look ahead at another local movie often mentioned in the media. Take a look:

Highway Pirates

Jim Bultas‘s film about landlocked pirates and a death-defying drive to deliver a package gets its time on the big screen. Here’s the trailer:

A student film about a cynical, pessimistic young man plans to end his life only to screw it up and have to endure the efforts of a young woman to show him what he has to live for. Trailerage:

Finally, added on for extra intrigue is the full-length trailer for the locally filmed movie 180 about a rocker trying to turn his life around after a brush with death. In case you can’t make it in person to see it on the giant screen with killer sound, here’s it is:

The accolades for the locally filmed and mostly locally acted Winter’s Bone continue to pile up. And it just went from a great local story to a national powerhouse, thanks to four Oscar nominations announced this morning.

Winter’s Bone earned nominations for Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay. Of course, it won the Grand Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and picked up steam from there.

The Academy Awards are Feb. 27 on ABC.

Drury graduate Chris Beckman has been invited to attend the 2011 Sundance Film Festival where his video oops will be screened in the short film program. Beckman’s video was one of 81 short films chosen for the festival which will be held in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah January 20-30.

Beckman describes his video as, “A lucid, seamless voyage through the Internet’s infinite repository of ‘throwaway’ social documentation and into the humanity of everyday life – via YouTube’s clumsiest videographers.”

Beckman began the project by selecting 100-150 videos off of YouTube of people doing accidental things, such as, dropping the camera. Eventually, Beckman used portions of 40-45 YouTube videos. “It’s cool that people feel free enough to upload videos of them dropping the camera,” Beckman said. “It’s another thing that kind of attracted me to the videos. Salvaging almost useless things to make something that people want to watch.”

Beckman, who graduated from Drury in May 2010 with a degree in Fine Arts in the Department of Art and Art History, originally created the piece for a class called Video Art co-taught by Drury professors Blaine Whisenhunt and Greg Booker with assistance from Brian Shipman, a Drury video instructor.

On being selected for Sundance, Beckman said, “I was really surprised. Definitely pleased. When I first started this project I thought it was a class assignment that I could expand to play in a gallery. The fact that it got a life of its own and all kinds of people appreciate it kind of floored me. It’s exciting.”

Beckman plans to attend the Sundance Film Festival next month. Eventually, he hopes to go to graduate school where he will study film or art.

Campbell 16 will host Tapestries of Hope for one showing on September 28.

Campbell 16 Cine continues a run on limited showings of lesser known, documentaries and indie films with Tapestries of Hope – an acclaimed documentary about the life of women in Zimbabwe. It will show just once at Campbell 16 – Tuesday, September 28 (7:30 p.m.), so you may want to purchase tickets in advance. Unfamiliar? Here’s the description from the press release:

Tapestries of Hope is the story of filmmaker Michealene Cristini Risley who traveled to Zimbabwe to document the work of Betty Makoni and the Girl Child Network. The film exposes an issue that continues to be ignored: the rape and abuse of thousands of young girls in Zimbabwe by men who believe it will cure their HIV/AIDS. For women, life in Zimbabwe is a constant barrage of abuse and obstacles.

The most striking element of Tapestries of Hope is not the hell the young rape survivors have lived through, but their unbreakable spirit.

While shooting on location, Risley and her assistant were arrested, imprisoned, and eventually deported by the authorities. Despite only being able to film in the country for a few weeks, the footage Risley captured – particularly interviews with rape survivors and admitted rapists alike – is incredibly compelling.

As the movie artwork says, “If you’ve loved a woman, see this film!”

We’ve been warning you, and letting you know that Winter’s Bone is finally going to be up for mass public consumption.

Now it’s time to eat.

The film that captured best film and screenplay at the Sundance Film Festival, and has received legions of positive reviews is making its Springfield theater debut Friday at Campbell 16. The catch? The movie that was exclusively filmed in Stone and Christian counties with many local actors and was also based on Daniel Woodrell’s local novel of the same title, will only be in theaters up until July 1. As for tonight, TAGsgf.com’s Chris DeRosier and I are heading to tonight’s pre-screening Campbell 16. If you still need some more convincing to see the flick, we will have more behind-the-scenes coverage of the event, including a fresh post-movie Q&A with staff and crew.

If you’re looking to mix sundown summer weather with free entertainment, the Movies at Founders Park series is back beginning Friday, July 9. The free movie series runs on Fridays and Saturdays from July 9 to Aug. 28, in Founders Park at 330 E. Water Street. All movies begin at dusk.

The cost is free with tickets obtained at the Chesterfield and Doling Family Centers, Mediacom Ice Park, the Busch Municipal Building and Mediacom Offices. Admission without a free ticket is $5. Children 5 and under are always free.

Following Friday’s sold out, 450-person screening of Winter’s Bone at Missouri State’s Plaster Student Union, members of the cast and crew were joined by MSU film professors to conduct a question and answer section.

TAGsgf.com was on hand to capture the entire session surrounding the film that was named best screenplay and best film at Sundance Film Festival. While there is little way to identify who is speaking, it’s a riveting conversation about how the movie was made, what choices went into some tough decisions and how involved local people were in shaping the culture of the movie.

The first voice you will hear is WB director Debra Granik and many of the questions are asked by Missouri State film professor Mark Biggs. Also included in the discussion are Winter’s Bone actresses Lauren Sweetser (Gail), Shelley Waggener (Sonya) and Nixa native Casey MacLaren (Megan), actors Cody Brown (Floyd) and Isaiah Stone (Sonny) and actress/musician/historian Marideth Sisco.

The clip is nearly 40 minutes long, but worth it, even if you have to download it and listen to it later.

Winter’s Bone is coming home for the first time.

The 2010 Sundance Grand Jury Prize winning film, shot in the Ozarks, will screen at 8 p.m. in SGF at Missouri State’s Plaster Student Union, giving a sneak peek to 450 people before being released to theaters in June. Depending on your perception of good or bad news, the event is sold out, but don’t worry, TAGsgf.com will have thorough coverage that will get you ready for the June 18 unveiling at Campbell 16.

But, back to tonight. Two local musical groups who are featured in the film, Marideth Sisco’s band and White River Music Company, will play at 7 p.m. The film will screen at 8 p.m. Afterward, there will be a short interview and Q&A session with the film director, Debora Granik.

As for the plot, here is a summation.  Winter’s Bone follows Ree Daniels, a teenage Ozark Mountain girl, as she tries to keep her family together. After her meth cooking father puts the family home up as collateral and disappears, Ree travels across the roughest part of the country into life threatening situations to find him and keep the bail-bondsman from taking their home and putting her, her younger siblings, and mentally-ill mom out in the bone cold winter.

No, you’re right. The Drawn Together Movie wasn’t 3D or successful, or probably even very good, but it was released on DVD today. However, that one movie about the giant blue people is out and it was rather successful (the good part has been the subject of much debate). I never watched Avatar in 2D at the theater, so it’s merely speculation, but the special effects are what made it worth viewing for me. Before I saw the visual masterpiece, I heard the talk of how the story was a 21st Century-rendition of Pocahontas, and can see how that would be even more evident without the distractions floating around your 3D glasses.

Crazy Heart and The Lovely Bones are a couple rental options the next time you’re looking for a night in.

With that said, the week’s big release is the $166-million grossing, 2012, and it’s loaded cast – John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Woody Harrelson, Oliver Platt, Danny Glover. Directed by Roland Emmerich , 2012 depicts the series of natural disasters which threaten mankind. It’s on the better side of three hours long (158 minutes), but the story continues to move, with great performances by Cusack (no surprise) and Glover (a little bit of surprise).

Edie Falco and Nurse Jackie is a first-season must have.

The wooden box is mysteriously delivered to a usual suburban couple and the press of a button delivers $1-million (and death to somebody they don’t know). Cameron Diaz (no matter the story or production qualities) is a personal favorite and will always be worth the cost of rental admission, especially in a new type of suspense thriller.

Hollywood Video near Fort on Battlefield is closing its doors, which is good news for you, if you’re looking for birthday/Valentine’s/wedding? gifts. The shelves are clearing, but there’s still a great selection. On the way in you can grab candy for 50 cents and the rest, from what I gathered basically looked like this: $4.98 for last summer’s movies (Pineapple Express, Hitchcock, Step Brothers) and up to $10.98 for some of the new stuff. Video games started at $4.50 for PS2 and the selection was pretty solid from about a decade. Games from the last couples years were already picked over, but it’s worth a look.

This is surely a sign of things to come for Blockbuster … damn you, RedBox! Family Video is probably safe, don’t they still have the private adult room? If so, business will be fine.

For just a bit more than $43 I purchased seven movies (including Pineapple Express, Horton Hears a Who – for my son, of course, and Tropic Thunder) and an old NHL video game (2006) because there’s never been a bad hockey game.

Congratulations on your kudo, Betty White!

Sandra Bullock grabbed a kudo (really, that’s the most creative name a group of actors could come up with?) for best Female Performance in a Leading Role for her work as Leigh Anne Tuohy in The Blind Side – she also won at the Golden Globes. I imagine the SAG Award nominations and voting are very similar to a vote for Student Council, but the rest of the awards were also interesting and probably serve as a decent measuring stick for the Oscars and such. Despite the awards, Bullock is still seen as the Oscar underdog, most predictors still aren’t saying too much. Jeff Bridges won top male performance (Crazy Heart). The cast of Inglourious Basterds won outstanding performance by a whole cast, an award, I think, could carry over to the biggest trophy in film.

Early Oscar Thoughts

Votes were due this last Saturday, and it looks like Avatar may be losing steam in award talks. However it’s not slowing at the box office, Avatar is getting ready to break Titanic’s domestic ($600 million) and worldwide gross ($1.8 billion). With a handful of Golden Globes under its belt (including Best Picture for drama), and the massive numbers it continues to put up, it will still be among the nominees. Inglouious Basterds is my favorite, and would be my pick for best film. I also like Where the Wild Things Are and Up in this year’s crop, but their “genre” will hold voters off.

From what I can gather, Sherlock Holmes kicks ass. Very slowly. Former SGFer and lifetime member of the Super Chip Awesome Club, Grover Graham, said via instant message, “There’s a lot of ass kickin in slo mo. He basically thinks about what he’s going to do in slow mo, then does it in fast mo, so you get to see the ass kickin twice.” Meanwhile, I heard of people paying $14 multiple times on separate occasions to see Avatar at the IMAX. The movie might actually be OK, but you’ve got to have something better to do with your time.

Nothing opens this week, but we'll see if Michael Cera hits again when Youth In Revolt opens on Jan. 8.

This is where I would normally give you the movie lock of the week, but there isn’t a single movie opening this week, so I’ll just say that I can’t believe we have to wait another whole week for Youth in Revolt. Those guys haven’t missed yet (Allen would disagree citing Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist was too young, but I thought it worked in the date setting) and I have a nervous anxiety with each opening they have (don’t worry, it’s not serious). Anyway, no new movies mean no locks this week, so it’s a no line weekend, but here are your leaders:
