While there has been no official announcement from the Springfield Cardinals, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting veteran infielder Nick Punto will begin a rehab assignment today at Double-A Springfield.
Punto has been out since May 18 with a right forearm strain. The 33-year-old utility infielder .262/.355/.385 with no home runs and 11 RBIs. This is his second stint on the DL after missing the beginning of the season because of a sports hernia.
In his career, Punto is a .248/.323/.324 hitter in 10 seasons split between Philadelphia and Minnesota. We will update with details when the Springfield Cardinals release more information.
Third baseman David Freese begins a rehab assignment today, as well, but it’s at Triple-A Memphis. There should be no surprise there. During a rehab assignment last summer in SGF, Freese tore ligaments in his right ankle rounding third base while trying to score. He joked last week to the Post-Dispatch that there was no way he was heading back to Springfield. TAGsgf.com rehashed the David Freese panic timeline last summer.
