You can't front on Chuck when he goes roundhouse, and you can't front on this lineup of shows, either.
How good is this night of shows? Consider:
* A night of concerts this deep in local talent doesn’t need touring acts to boost interest. It has them anyway.
* One of those touring acts IS local talent, back in SGF for one night while jaunting across America in support of its latest acclaimed album.
* The name of one of the touring acts has the word f*** in it. Yes, it’s a punk band.
* Some of the local acts onstage tonight either don’t play out very often or are doing so tonight in a different-than-usual configuration.
Yup, SGF music is bringing it in full force tonight. How much force is that? Let us be your barometer. Other things that remind us of this kind of force:
Yeah, it’s like that. On to the shows:
* Ha Ha Tonka, John Henry & The Engine and Osage Orange at Lindberg’s. Bloodshot Records artist Ha Ha Tonka, veterans of festivals such as Lollapalooza and SXSW, returns to its hometown for a tour stop in support of Novel Sounds of the Nouveau South. They bring with them a great Springsteen-esque act from Columbia in John Henry & The Engine and the revived band The Verbs (Redux), now known as Osage Orange. Big show.
* Q102 Homegrown with ENduVal, Knife*Death and NuklDeep at The High Life Live Martini Lounge. Q102′s monthly all-SGF showcase comes to the High Life headlined by a band made up of former members of Adara and Adamant, together with prog metal’s merry men and the new incarnation of radio-rock group Burnt Echoes.
* Anthony Gomes at Cartoons. The Blues Down Under concert series is back with more wailing-guitar goodness. The last time Gomes rolled through SGF was with The New Soul Cowboys back in the summer; see him doing his blues thing tonight.
* The Fuck Off and Dies, Opposites Attack, Agent 15 and Cutthroat Shamrock at The Outland Ballroom. Punk rock of many flavors invades the Ballroom, of the straight-ahead variety, the ska-tinged and even the Irish music-meets-punk kind.
* Shinebriter and The North Decade at Patton Alley Pub. It’s not often SGF gets a Shinebriter show, but Christopher May‘s excellent rock outfit is out tonight, paired up with a band on a roll following its appearance in last week’s Pixies tribute. What’s more, you can get into this show FREE if you arrive before 10 p.m. Capitalize.
* The Seed at Springfield Brewing Company
* Tiffany Rene & Donnie Ray of Trash Angels at Gravel Bar. The singer and lead guitarist of Trash Angels never get to take the acoustic duo tangent, but they indulge themselves tonight in the cozy confines of the bar above The Tipsy Turtle Pub.
* Jazz in the Atrium at Doubletree Hotel. Montage performs with guest Carol Reinert on vocals at this weekly FREE Friday-night show. (6 to 9 p.m.)
* Black Box Revue with guest Vasovagl at The Outland. Hot Tub had to drop off the bill, but Vasovagl steps in to follow up on its performance at the TAG/BBR Halloween Party with another mesmerizing set of electro tracks. FREE to get in.
* The Honkytonk Renovators and John Minor at Brighton Creek Bar & Grill
* Tuck & Abney at The Tipsy Turtle Pub
* Deep Fried Squirrel at The Ugly Mug Live Music Tavern
* The Full Moon Blues Band at Three 20′s Club
* The Juke Dawgs at The Daily Pub
* Open Fire at Fusion Bar & Grill
* Pat Pending at Archie’s Lounge
* Static Variation at Dennis’ Place
* Thin Line at Mille’s Turn of the Century Cafe
* Thirst N Howl at W.F. Cody’s South
