HS Football Spotlight: Catholic’s Scott Chesbro

IMG 0522 HS Football Spotlight: Catholics Scott Chesbro

Catholic's Scott Chesbro

It’s funny to think of how dominating a kid can be on offense when he’s the second-leading rusher on the team. But for Catholic High School senior Scott Chesbro, just his presence can straightjacket an opposing defense.

With the naked eye, Chesbro stats don’t scream all-state through six games:

  • 36 carries, 368 yards, 5 TDs
  • 4 receptions, 88 yards, 2 TDs

But he draws so much attention, the rest of the offense has been able to flourish. Add in the fact this might be the most gifted Irish offense armada in recent memory, the eyeballs and shoulder pads zoned in on Chesbro have created other household names in fullback Nick Gori, quarterback Chad McBride and tight ends Tim Gerwel and Jack Wolfe.

Why all the attention? Over the past two seasons, Chesbro has rushed 229 times for 1479 yards and 19 TDs, plus he’s had 40 receptions for 555 yards and 6 TDs. The same can be said about Reggie Bush’s impact on the World Champion New Orleans Saints — it’s what he can do that’s just as scary as what he does.

Combine that with Catholic’s fast 5-1 start – including a loss to Class 4 ranked Bolivar (6-0) and the Fightin’ Irish could be looking at a deep playoff run.

Chesbro’s a multi-sport athlete that excels in basketball and baseball as well. He said he’s uncertain of his college future, but he plans to play something down the line. And how athletic is he? Since he’s taking less of a pounding on offense, he leads the team with 6 interceptions in 6 games.

Yes, he’s that dangerous.
