I’m going to defer to all of the news outlets for the crazy play-by-play of Joplin High School’s 36-35 overtime victory Friday night at Hillcrest.

But what I do want to begin with are some of the notes and highlights from possibly the wackiest high school football games in recent memory.

  • The game lasted 3 hours, 35 minutes. The second half didn’t start until 8:55 p.m.
  • Joplin senior quarterback Aaron Frost was 24-of-43 for 400 yards, 4 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. At halftime, he was 16-of-24 for 316 yards and four TDs. You can hear about it from him in our video below.
  • Joplin wide receiver Dayton Whitehead had 10 receptions for 170 yards and three TDs.
  • Hillcrest jumped out to a 15-0 lead, thanks to a Frost interception that set up a short field, then scored on a safety
  • Each team scored on a safety
  • Joplin scored 29 points in the second quarter, including a stretch of 23 unanswered points over a 1 minute, 46 second stretch. In that stretch, they scored on a safety and recovered an onside kick.
  • Hillcrest held Joplin scoreless in the second half.
  • Dorial Green-Beckham had only two catches, but they were both exciting. One went for a 34-yard gain, when he caught it on the left side of the field, then reversed direction, ran 10 yards backward to gain yards up the right sideline. His other was a 69-yard TD up the middle seam. sprinting away from the secondary.
  • Oklahoma assistant coach/wide receivers coach Jay Norvell was in attendance.
  • Hillcrest scored a 46-yard rushing touchdown on a fake punt to the up back Luke Coleman.
  • After Joplin converted a fourth down in overtime, tailback Chris Payton-Barba scored on a 1-yard TD run.
  • Hillcrest answered Joplin on its first play of OT, with QB Matt Futrell finding Jeremy Coleman for a 25-yard TD.
  • The two-point conversion pass sailed past Dorial Green-Beckham to end the game.
  • Hillcrest QB Matt Futrell was 13-of-39 passing for 311 yards and 3 TDs.
  • If you take away Luke Coleman’s 46-yard fake punt TD run, Hillcrest mustered only 52 rushing yards on 17 carries.
  • Joplin had 10 penalties for 86 yards.
  • Did I mention the game was longer than most NFL games?

Lessons learned

  • Joplin QB Aaron Frost is the real deal. He’s mobile and most of his throws were accurate. His second-half numbers suffered because of many drops by the receivers. He was comfortable throwing on the run and flashed good play-action fakes, helping him get in a rhythm with rollouts and bootlegs.
  • Hillcrest QB Matt Futrell was very erratic, but when his throws were on the money, they were beautiful. When you throw it 39 times, you need more than 13 completions.
  • Joplin showed it resiliency, but didn’t appear to be ready to play. Still, the Eagles are 3-0 and have a quarterback that allows you to always be in the game.
  • Hillcrest’s defense was stingy and aggressive to begin the game, but seemed to wear down. Joplin has enough players and doesn’t need players to play both offense and defense. Hillcrest seemed to wear down throughout the marathon game.
