TAG 5: Mexican Food

(TAG 5 is a top five list compiled by secret ballot, submitted by the four horsemen of TAG. An extremely complicated equation is used to calculate the polls. Mostly they are related to SGF, sometimes they are not. A new TAG 5 is released every Monday.)

Marias TAG 5: Mexican Food

TAGsgf.com's favorite Mexican-style restaurant.

While it’s true that Chinese-style restaurants are king in the Ozarks, there’s plenty of gravitational Mexican food in SGF as well. Most SGFers claim their Mexican food territory, so this week’s top five is to settle the score once and for all. While our winner didn’t receive any top votes, Maria’s is the only restaurant to etch a space on all four ballots. The always buzzing, always busy home of the massive tequila list dominates its spot downtown on South Avenue with house twists on the standard Mexican fare. Mexican Villa grabbed 12 points, including a pair of first-place mentions – it’s the home cooking of local Mexican food, led by the Sancho. Cielito Lindo, La Hacienda, and El Sombrero round out our top five. What’s your favorite place for an enchilada (and perhaps some tequila)?

Four votes (as of 8/30/10)
Total points, first-place votes in parenthesis

1. Maria’s – 14*
2. Mexican Villa – 12 (2)
3. Cielito Lindo – 9 (1)
4. La Hacienda 6
5. El Sombrero – 5 (1)

* – Unanimous

Others receiving votes: Prima’s – 4, Los Portales – 4, Big Fat Burrito’s – 2, Adobe Coyote’s Cafe – 2, Taco Wagon – 1, Tortilleria Perches – 1.

Look, I know this is going to probably garner a lot of hate, but seriously…

Maria’s is terrible. They don’t even serve salsa, it’s watery marinara sauce! And the dry rice and loose beans? Ugh. These are some basics of mexican food, and their rendition is just straight from a Sysco box or can, and taste awful. I won’t argue that the bar is great, because it is. But the fact that the Tortilleria Perches got one vote and Purple Burrito none are pretty disturbing. Those places are serving Mexican food cooked by real Hispanic folks!

Seriously dudes, go eat a Lengua or Cachete burrito plate at the Tortilleria Perches and tell me that anything at Maria’s can come close. I dare you.

I agree 100% regarding the salsa, Ryan. Thanks for chiming in. I think this will make a very good reader poll topic…

I’m surprised El Puente didn’t even get a mention. The seafood tacos at Maria’s are fantastic, but if I want straight up Mexican food I’m definitely thinking somewhere else.

P.S. Mexican Villa is only Mexican in name. Of course I’m not a Springfield native so I don’t understand the obsession.

Cielito Lindo and Prima’s are my runaway choices when I’m fiending Mexican. The rest are just there. Personally, I don’t put Big Fat or Purple Burrito in the same group, but Purple Burrito is incredible.

The rice and beans (and salsa) do leave a lot to be desired at Maria’s, but for me they make up for it in a stellar Guacamole. It’s definitely not my favorite. What this means to me is that I need to give Tortilleria another shot.
