The Show Report, 7/29: Time to Crown a King

King of the Roots The Show Report, 7/29: Time to Crown a KingThere will be a new king by the end of tonight. No, SGF hasn’t become a monarchy, though there are moments where one wonders. We’re talking about King of the Roots, a battle of the bands to send the winner to the Main Stage at the Roots ‘n’ Blues ‘n’ BBQ festival in Columbia October 1 and 2. The festival is one of the largest of its kind in the Midwest, attracting some of the biggest names in roots and blues music every year, and a panel of judges will send one of these acts to play alongside them: Full Moon Blues Band; The Mud Sharks; Nigel & The Ghost; Not Black, Not White, Just Blues; The Terry Quiett Band and The Underground Blues Division. A modest $3 gets you in the door.

Also tonight:

* Grant Maledy Trio and Dan Weinhaus & John Paul Chapman at Lindberg’s. An interesting twist to tonight’s show: Thanks to a guest appearance on bass for the Trio by Brandon Henson, tonight will be the first time all four Greene Coast members will play the same stage in more than a year. Reunion set, anyone?

* Tripwire at Brighton Creek Bar & Grill

* The Detectives at The Outland

* The ABS Band at W.F. Cody’s South

* Allen Ross at The Tipsy Turtle Pub

* Gas Pump Talent at Ebbets Field

* The LemonDrop DJs with guest DJs Mahf, Steddy P and Far Out at The High Life Live Martini Lounge. The While You Were Sleeping Tour stops by to breathe a different air into the popular weekly DJ show.
