The biggest problem tonight: What to choose? Berch‘s anniversary show? Black Box Revue with two guest performers? An all-acoustic Red Dirt rock-out? The Skeletons playing a weekend gig? The truth is every location we found with music in its room is bringing the quality tonight. It’s the kind of music evening one always hopes for but rarely gets, especially in summertime. Props to the SGF music world, and props to you if you can get to more than a handful of all of these:
* Berch, Focus! Focus! and David Duncan at Nathan P. Murphy’s. Tonight is the one-year anniversary of Berch’s first show in a local downtown club, and as part of the festivities you can expect to hear some new material tonight from its upcoming album release.
* Black Box Revue with guests Jen Lasher and Bruder at The Outland. Lasher is back for her second SGF set of the week after blowing up Make Out Tuesday night. Add in Bruder, coming up from Tulsa, and you’ve got one of the most exciting BBR nights of the summer to date.
* John D. Hale, Matt Stell, Cole Porter and Chris Brotherton at Dennis’ Place. Hale and Stell are launching an all-acoustic mini-tour and making Dennis’ Place one of their stops. Red Dirt with the volume on 5? Sweet. Bring the beer money, leave the earplugs at home.
* The Skeletons at Harlow’s. Fret not; just because the band is playing a weekend gig in addition to their Mondays-in-July Outland shows doesn’t mean you’ll need to pay any steep cover charge to see one of the city’s all-time best bar bands. Tonight’s show, as with all Harlow’s gigs, is FREE to get in.
* TAG Patio Party at Houlihan’s with host Jimi James. Word is Aaron Holmes of The Lowdown Fancy and The Sociables will be sitting in to add some extra flavor to tonight’s show. Don’t be surprised if you see an extra surprise guest at some point, too. Of course, the specials remain the constant: $4 Long Islands, $3 wells, half-off beers and $6 appetizers. As the British would say, it’s gonna be mega.
* Honky Suckle and Fast Food Junkies at The High Life Live Martini Lounge
* Hamburger Cows and Get On UP! at Frisco Tap Room. Two shows in two days for Steve Ames and Bo Brown of Hamburger Cows, who are having an unusually prolific week. Capitalize and see them in this cozy Commercial Street joint.
* Sovereign, Hessian Crucible, Tokyo Sauna and Gnash Rambler at The Outland Ballroom
* Shouting Secrets, Benefit Of a Doubt and Call Me Beta at The Ugly Mug Live Music Tavern
* The Shotgun Brothers and The Electrics at Patton Alley Pub
* Sounds on the Square with The Spacetones (5 p.m.), The Jackson Hunt Band (6:00), Nigel & The Ghost (7:15) and Capt’n Black’s Sea Dogges (8:30) on Park Central Square
* Canto 17 at Bleachers Sports Bar & Grill
