We had the opportunity recently to sit in on a preview screening of Unknown Films‘ newest short project. This… Is the Orange Line is an evocative black-and-white look at Chicago’s famous “L” metro system and a day in its life, all cut to sync with Sir Edward Elgar‘s “Cello Concerto in E Minor Op. 85,” which director Nathan Maulorico, to even his surprise, received permission from the composer to use. Maulorico tells us he plans to submit the short in this year’s third annual Springfield Little Film Festival, which is coming up in the fall. No further details have been officially announced yet, but if it’s anything like last year’s festival you can expect a strong crop of local filmmakers making a variety of movies (last year included separate competitions for short films and silent films), as well as contests such as last year’s “Hardly Silent” category, where local musicians competed to score a handful of finished local films. All of that is speculation for the time being, though, so let’s concentrate on the present and available.
