It has been one of the most intriguing questions to come up since the announcement that The Ozark Mountain Daredevils would be playing their first SGF show in four years this September 10 and 11 at Gillioz Theatre: Which Daredevils will be playing? After all, few bands have had as many lineup changes as the Daredevils. They’re no Santana, mind you, but fully 22 men have earned the right to be called a Daredevil since the band was formed in 1972. But what no official outlet run by or connected to the band–not even its official website–tells you is, who is playing in the band today?
The Daredevils’ original lineup–Buddy Brayfield, Steve Cash, Randle Chowning, John Dillon, Michael “Supe” Granda and Larry Lee–no longer plays together, and hasn’t since 1980, if research is to be believed. According to Dwight Glenn, the promoter for this year’s September concert, the lineup showgoers will see onstage consists of nine members from various points in the band’s history: Kelly Brown, Cash, Ruell Chappell, Dillon, Granda, Ron Gremp, Bill Jones, Dave Painter and Nick Sibley. The plan, Glenn says, is for two sets of music separated by an intermission, totaling about 30 songs in all.
Though any hardcore fan will naturally be disappointed by not seeing the original lineup, and many people will notice subtle changes in some of the band’s hits (Larry Lee, for example, won’t be there to sing “Jackie Blue” as he originally did), Glenn rightly points out that this lineup has been performing together for a while now, and doing well. The crowds certainly still dig it, too. Check out this video Ruell Chappell took from onstage in Kansas City:
