HS recruiting update: Brodie Wingert’s summer and Williams verbals to Lady Bears
As we move through the summer, it’s always necessary to check in with high school athletes during the summer between their junior and senior years. Throughout the summer, TAGsgf.com will bring updates on local athletes that are receiving Division I interest.
While in and around Springfield, Kickapoo senior Brodie Wingert is a guy who is known as a scorer and a rebounder. But when he’s playing for KC Pump ‘n Run on the AAU circuit, he’s uses that 6-foot-4 frame to become a defensive force and energy off the bench. It’s a different role than he’s used to, but it’s more like the one he’ll use at the college level.
“I like it,” Wingert said. “Whatever gets me on the court and helps the team win.”
Wingert, who said he has been courted by D-I schools like Missouri State, UMKC and Yale, he’s picking up a ton of interest from D-II schools Drury, and said Evangel recently offered him a scholarship.
“I want to be able to play right away,” Wingert said. “If that’s at a D-I, great and if it’s not, that’s fine, too.”
Wingert will be a senior at Kickapoo next season. He said Pump n’ Run’s next tournament is in July.
Williams commits to Lady Bears
Mount Vernon’s Kenzie Williams committed to play for Missouri State’s basketball program Tuesday, the News-Leader reported.
The 5-11 guard averaged 17.6 points, 2.9 assists and 5.2 rebounds as a junior in leading Mt. Vernon to a Class 3 title. Apparently she had no other offers, but was drawing interest from many other Missouri Valley Conference schools. Lady Bears coach Nyla Milleson continues to keep the area’s top talent from leaving.
I found an interesting nugget of information in KSPR.com’s story on Williams, too.
Mt. Vernon returns all but 1 player from last years state title team, including the addition of Fair Grove all-state transfer Erin Gavin.
Is there any way that Mt. Vernon doesn’t repeat as Class 3 champs?
