It’s official, Trey Starks is heading to Indian Hills Community College to continue his basketball career. KSPR 33′s Mike Scott first reported the news this morning.
The 5-foot-11 Hillcrest senior, who gained national attention for his SportsCenter No. 1 Top Play for his hurdle-a-6-foot-5-guy-on-an-alley-oop dunk in the Class 5 championship game, has chosen to play for Indian Hills. Located in Ottumwa, Iowa, Indian Hills is of the top junior colleges in the country, winning 83 percent of its games since 1990, including three national titles (1997-99).
Many are familiar with the Starks story, but here’s a quick recap. After transferring to from Glendale to Hillcrest for his senior season, Starks was academically ineligible until the second semester. The Hornets captured the Class 5 championship, winning each of the 13 games Starks played in after gaining eligibility through Hillcrest’s credit recovery program.
I’m working to get a quote from Starks, but his main reason for choosing IHCC has to be its remarkable record for producing Division I players. In all, IHCC has produced 71 Division I players, including five of which have turned into NBA draft picks. Currently, seven former IHCC players are on Division I rosters, including Marquette’s Dwight Buycks, St. John’s Dwight Hardy, Iowa State’s Laron Dendy, Arkansas’ Delvon Johnson, Colorado’s Marcus Relphorde and former Vashon players, SE Missouri’s Leon Powell and Middle Tennessee’s James Washington.
