Springfield Movie Times and Tinsel Town Report (3/4-3/11): Mencia+Whitaker? Ugh.

Carlos Mencia and Forest Whitaker lead in Our Family Wedding - Fox Searchlight's newest in pay-to-suffer viewing technology.

Alice in Wonderland is smashing at the box office, setting the record for largest March opening ever ($116.1M in the U.S., $230M worldwide) – also Tim Burton’s biggest weekend. Johnny Depp will remain at the top for a while with this one, despite receiving largely critical reviews (from the guys who get paid to write these things). None of this week’s openings figure to contend.

Matt Damon is back with director Paul Greengrass for another political thriller in the same vein as the Bourne series on which the two previously worked together. The story will be slightly different, but there will probably be a lot of Damon sneakin’ around and kickin’ ass. It takes four words to explain why Our Family Wedding won’t work: 1. Carlos; 2. Mencia; 3. Forest; 4. Whitaker. That is all on another touchy, feely, awful, but well-timed (just before nuptial season), name-casted nightmare. Now, that is all. She’s Out of My League will have funny dialogue. I was about to be critical of the cast (including the new Seth Rogen), but then I remembered that director Jim Field Smith developed Seth Rogen and others in Knocked Up. You’ll find the same naughty language and riotous (or offensive, depending on your view) scenes.
