Remember when Yankton Sothern side project HeartPunch was a one-concert-only assemblage? Yeah, we didn’t think it would work out that way, either. The idea of a band fronted by the Fullers Earthguitarist/Bottlefish drummer and backed by The Skeletons‘ Lou Whitney, BringYourGreenHat‘sRitchie Allen and The Domino Kings‘ Steve Newman is just too good to pull the plug on before we lap in the waters a few times. Prolonging the magic that much more, Sothern says the local music supergr–er, um, dream team–has been hard at work in the studio to produce a takehome copy of its music.
The album has been in progress at Whitney’s The Studio (328 South Ave., 417-862-0600) for a few months now, and Sothern tells us we could see a completed album–likely an EP–by sometime in February. Of course, as Sothern rightly points out, the plan was to have a finished product ready for the fall, so the planned completion date remains speculation, but with the progress made it becomes a more educated guess than previously. Sothern describes the album as “80 percent finished,” with keyboard parts and mixing left to do before completion. Yes, we said “keyboard parts;” though no one tickles the electric ivory for the band onstage, Sothern says he wanted to add the extra element to the songs. Hey, why not? We’ll keep you abreast of more details as they emerge.
