Berch travels to Memphis to finish recording debut

Berch travels to Memphis to finish recording debut

9 March 2010 · Leave a Comment

You only get to make your first album once, and for a young band such as local pop-rock group Berch that signals opportunity. After recording a handful of tracks at Monarch Recording Studio inside the Monarch Art Factory (home of Randy Bacon Photography Studio & Gallery, if that helps), the band saw and seized the opportunity to hit the road and record in a music Mecca: Memphis, Tennessee. The group is currently holed up inside The Grove Studio working on tracking for its songs “Robots,” “Sledgehammer,” “Speed of the Sun” and “Still... [Read the full story]

After watching the Missouri State men’s basketball team lose in person to Wichita State in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament last Friday in St. Louis, I didn’t think there was much to say afterward. We’ve said all of it already: They struggle to finish a close game against a good team. The defense isn’t good enough down the stretch. Is it the players, the coaches or the inexperience? Is it all three, or some type of combo? But after watching some of the Championship Week games on the ESPN family of networks and watching bits and pieces of the... [Read the full story]

The Allen and Kaitlyn SGF Lunch Tour: Andoro’s Pizzeria

9 March 2010 · 2 Comments

This week, the Allen and Kaitlyn SGF lunch tour moves to Andoro's. When you are a brother and sister combo that live separately in Springfield for completely different reasons, the grind of work, school and social lives can make it seem like you’re not even in the same zip code. So, once a week, bro-and-sis duo Allen and Kaitlyn Vaughan try to meet up for lunch, for two reasons. Catch up on each others’ lives (see: drama). Eat something that’s not homemade sandwiches or cafeteria food. Now it’s time to add a third reason: To be able to write... [Read the full story]

Pinocchio at Springfield Little TheatreSince 1863, Pinocchio has been the symbol of honesty. The story of Geppetto, a carpenter, carving the wooden puppet who dreams of being a “real boy” was a popular folklore lesson long before Walt Disney ripped it in the 1940 film. Under the direction of Stephanie Judkins, SGFers have 10 days to see the story in a different form, live theatre, at Historic Landers Theatre. The show is scheduled to run March 4-14. Cast and showtimes below (from Springfield Little Theatre): Starring: PINOCCHIO – Ruth Ann Chaney GEPPETTO... [Read the full story]

(TAG 5 is a top five list compiled by secret ballot, submitted by the four horsemen of TAG. An extremely complicated equation is used to calculate the polls. Mostly they are related to SGF, sometimes they are not. A new TAG 5 is released every Monday.) Heather Anderson of the Tipsy Turtle PubGood drinksmiths start with a perfect mix but it takes a lot more to be the best. Personality. Knowledge. Conversation. Quickness. Our top five list this week presents the best bartenders in SGF. Note: This isn’t favorite waterin’ hole, though that is a little reflective in the count.... [Read the full story]

Springfield Movie Times and Tinseltown Report (3/5-3/12): Burton and Depp back with Alice in Wonderland

5 March 2010 · Comments Off

Johnny Depp and Tim Burton are back at it with Alice in Wonderland. Depp as the Mad Hatter? Could there be a more suited role?Tim Burton and Johnny Depp have tapped Avatar on the shoulder and politely demanded America’s 3D screens with the highly anticipated release of Alice in Wonderland. In kicking off a big year in children’s movies (no, Tooth Fairy doesn’t count), Burton and Depp have a surefire masterpiece, expecting they steer away from musical (Coraline worked, Sweeney Todd didn’t). As far as kid’s flicks go, it will be a three-headed race... [Read the full story]

DVD Releases (3/9): One more reason to love/hate Michael Moore

Michael Moore draws commentary from both wings. Even people who like Michael Moore’s work think he can be hard to swallow sometimes (not a fat joke. seriously.), but love him or hate him Moore asks compelling questions that are buzzing in American homes. And while the production and blatant point of view tend...
